Lilian Jones
SU PRESIDENT

The figurehead of your Students' Union. Leads and oversees the work of your Student Officer Team. Ensures the Students' Union is valued by its members as an effective, responsive and accountable organisation. Chairs the Trustee Board, Student Executive Committee and Staffing Committee. Also sits on University Council and Senate as well as a number of other University committees.

During my time at university I’ve been involved in some fantastic societies and have had the chance to see areas where I believe the Union can be taken forward,  I thought I was the right person to do that.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

As cheesy as it sounds, I really can’t wait to get stuck into making changes in the SU happen.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

I’m really excited about developing a way for students to hold landlords to account, improving ease of access to mental health resources and helping to make the best use of available study space.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

I love the breadth of resources that are available to students to make the most of their time at university. Whether that’s getting involved in a society, volunteering with an organisation or playing sports there really is something for everyone if you look for it.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The green spaces, there are so many parks and the peak district is just on your doorstep. Make sure you take time to explore!

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Don’t put too much academic pressure on yourself, first year is a time for finding your feet and getting used to life away from home, so take time to explore the SU and the city and meet new people.

You should get involved in leadership at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

We’re the number one Students Union in the country and our student leadership (such as our student led SU council, which is the highest student decision making body) gives you a significant say in how our SU is run and can help to shape changes you care about.

Mel Kee
SU DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Represents students' commercial interests and oversees budgets and expenditure. Ensures Students' Union services are relevant and responsive to Student needs. Has key oversight over the Students' Union's commercial activity and communications. Chairs the Students' Union's Finance Committee. Sits on University Finance Committee, Senate Budget Committee and University Council.

Seeing the growth of concern in environmental sustainability, especially in reducing waste. I was really excited about the opportunity to continue the great spreading of sustainable practices in the SU, students and the local community.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Working with all the brilliant staff and students.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

To continue and grow the Reusable Revolution! And to make sure the SU outlets truly support the needs and wants of our students.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

The brilliant outlets… especially the new Our Zero Waste Shop!!

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The lovely people.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Get involved in volunteering! It’s a great way to get to know the city, de-stress and make friends.

You should get involved with our outlets at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

Any money you spend in our SU stays in our SU, in events and activities for students and enables us to continue the great ethical and sustainable practices in which we partake!

Anna Crump Raiswell
EDUCATION OFFICER

Responsible for all educational matters affecting students, undergraduate and postgraduate. Co-ordinates and supports democracy and student representation within the University, and works with the Academic Representative Committee to campaign on, and keep students informed of, academic issues. Sits on many University committees including University Senate and Learning & Teaching Committee.

I was inspired to become an SU officer because of the positive change I believe the role can bring about to student’s lives, particularly in regards to their well-being and academic life. I believed that I could have an positive impact if I put myself forward to run. I hope that during my time as an officer I can achieve what inspired me to run.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

I’m really looking forward to working with an all women officer team and inspiring other women to take up leadership roles.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

I’m hoping to achieve all my manifesto goals, as well as responding to rapidly changing higher education policy and the post-18 review; fighting the damaging marketisation of our education and protecting student interests.  I’m also hoping to continue the strong links between the SU and the University as I believe more can be achieved when working in partnership, whilst also retaining my integrity and principles.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

The campaigning culture within the SU gives students the opportunities to fight for what they believe in and gain the skills needed to be young activists. Whether that be a political cause, a local issue, or a national campaign, our SU gives us the resources and opportunity to do it.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The people! Working part-time jobs throughout my time at University really helped me to engage with people in the local community, both work colleagues and customers, helped me to get a sense of the city and understand the wonderful people who live here.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Join a society! The best thing about my university experience was being part of a political campaigning society, so I would recommend finding something they’re passionate about, or want to start doing, and go out and do it.

You should get involved in leadership at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

You should get involved in your department’s academic representation to be part education in the Students’ Union in order to have a say in the way your education is run; being part of this SU academic community is vital for building a more inclusive, accessible and enjoyable curriculum and way of learning.

Katharine Swindells
WELFARE OFFICER

Provides support, representation and raises awareness of student health, finance, housing & safety issues. Works closely with the Student Advice Centre to ensure relevant and effective advice is available to students. Works with the University to ensure adequate welfare provision and support for students.

I saw so many issues facing students' wellbeing:  lack of mental health provision, the glorification of harmful study habits, exploitative landlords, and employers taking advantage of student workers. With my campaigning background, I felt I had the skills and experience to tackle these issues and make lasting change.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Meeting so many people I’ve never had the chance to interact with before - students from every corner of the union, everyone who makes Sheffield such a great city, and officers from all over the country!

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

Implementing tangible, lasting change that helps students improve their own wellbeing and get the most out of their university experience.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

It’s so buzzing, whatever your interest - environmental campaigning, musical theatre, dungeons and dragons - you are guaranteed to find your place and your people.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The amazing history of activism that you can see it reflected in the passion and dedication of our students.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Chill out, it’s all going to be ok! And maybe eat less Broomhill Friery.

You should get involved in leadership at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

Welfare affects every single aspect of all of our lives, and it needs to be fought for. If you’re passionate about mental health, student safety or drug and alcohol policy, then come and have your say!

Cecilia Hudson-Molinaro
ACTIVITIES OFFICER

Oversees the provision of student activities and the Students' Union's societies. Works to increase the number of students engaged in societies, activities and volunteering projects. Works with the University to ensure recognition of the contribution students make through activities and the importance of societies and volunteering as part of the student experience at Sheffield.

The 17/18 officer team really inspired me to get involved and influenced me to run as an SU officer. Seeing all the amazing campaigns and work they have done encouraged me to use my student experience to support this years student community.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Meeting lots of talented individuals and getting involved in this years student led activities.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

My aim is to continue to support all our societies to ensure as many students are able to get involved in new activities as well as encouraging people to engage and support our local community. I am hoping to launch a societies type varsity alongside Hallam in order to showcase some of the amazing talent we have here in Sheffield.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

The SU has everything you need to feel at home straight away. All the staff are so welcoming and willing to go the extra mile to satisfy your needs.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The amount of open green space! The Peak District is definitely one of the best things about Sheffield, rain or shine it is the perfect place to go for a walk, climb, cycle, swim or pub lunch.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Be open minded and encourage yourself to come out of your comfort zone, take all the opportunities that come your way and don't get too stressed about your uni work. The first couple of weeks are meant for settling in and making new friends, so have fun!

You should get involved with committees and societies at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

They are a great opportunity to meet new people who share similar interests and most of all there is so much to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice! Students have the opportunity to change things for the better so getting involved in a committee is the starting point for a lasting impact.

Mayeda Tayyab
WOMEN'S OFFICER

Represents the views and interests of all women students within the Students' Union and University as well as at a national level and creates a student environment free from sexism and discrimination. Works with the Women's Committee to lead campaigns on the issues of women's rights and equality.

Coming from the background of Law and Criminology, Human Rights has been my main focus and the role of Women's Officer is perfect for working on Human Rights within the student community because this role does not only include representing women students but also students from other liberation groups such as LGBT+, BME etc.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Making memories with the officer team.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

To push the University to recruit a full time Sexual Harassment coordinator and persuade them to take staff-student sexual harassment seriously and have proper procedures in place to ensure that these cases are dealt with, without any bias.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

The food outlets lol.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

The greenery.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Don’t worry about the future. Just enjoy your course, make friends, have fun and make lots of memories because it all works out in the end.

You should get involved with liberation and diversity at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

Liberation and diversity is vital to our Union because we want all students to feel comfortable and welcomed at the University of Sheffield. Diversity is what makes us so great at Sheffield! And this can only be achieved if more students are involved in our liberation committees.

Sarah Morse
SPORTS OFFICER

Sits on the Sport Sheffield Board and has key relationships with University staff responsible for the provision of sports facilities and opportunities.

Having been involved in student led activity through the tennis club and being able to dedicate my time to improving the student experience and opportunities particularly surrounding sport.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Encouraging EVERYONE that sport really is for ALL and promoting the value that sport brings to students, the local community and the university.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

Break down accessibility barriers that all students face to participate and/or enhance performance in sport and exercise.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

All the services, outlets, bars and nights out it has to offer Sheffield Students.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

How green it is - we’re lucky to have so many open public spaces to enjoy.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Don’t put pressure on yourself to enjoy every single moment of Fresher’s Week and to feel you need to make best friends with everyone. It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous or homesick especially if it’s your first time away from home. If you don’t immediately like your flat mates, don’t panic you can meet many other people through your course, joining a society or getting involved with sport.

You should get involved with sport at Sheffield Students’ Union because…

It’s honestly the easiest way to meet loads of new and different people and of course the positive impact sport has on your physical and mental wellbeing during your time as a student as Sheffield.

Roxanne (Rex) Bechu
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS' OFFICER

SU Gallery (say hi to your Officer)

N.B. Only international students can stand to be the International Students' Officer, but all students can vote in the election.

A friend of mine saw the ‘She Should Run’ campaign and thought of me. That got me curious, I started reading the descriptions of the officers job and had an immediate crush on the International Students role. I have always been attracted to public service, I am very passionate about international students: to me it made sense.

What I’m looking forward to most during my year as an SU officer:

Meeting as many of you as possible, I would love to learn from and help each and everyone of you.

What I’m hoping to achieve this year:

Everything I am working on is aimed at increasing integration between international and home students.

What I Love about Sheffield Students’ Union is…

The entire staff is amazingly supportive, it feels like a big family.

The best thing about Sheffield is…

No matter who you are, there is always something tailored for you.

If you could give one piece of advice to as 1st year what would it be?

Go out of your flat and become friends with someone who comes from another country.

You should use Sheffield Students’ Union to be around people from all over the world because…

You have the opportunity to discover the world all over again through different cultures.
