With the University having the number one Journalism department in the country our Students’ Union should support the future of those students by supporting the print industry via the means of selling newspapers in ‘Our Shop’.
In the post-truth age that fake news spread online prevailingly, as we all have seen how it damaged our democratic system in the 2016 US presidential election and UK Brexit referendum, it's important for every civic to support those newspapers with the strict journalism ethics, help real fact checkers and rebuild the power of truths.
Absolutely essential, particularly more so as our Department of Journalism Studies is rated number 1 across the UK.
Thank you for submitting this Idea Alfie! Now that this has received the support of more than 25 Students this will be discussed at the next SU Council meeting on Thursday 14th March 2019. This will be held in Hicks Lecture Theatre 7 from 5:15pm and you are more than welcome to come along! I will be in touch with you after the meeting you update you on the discussion! In the mean time if you have any questions please get in touch with us at email@example.com.
Hi there! Here's an overview of what happened at Council when your idea was discussed: SU Development Officer, Mel Kee commented that the SU lost money from selling newspapers and as money made in the SU is reinvested back into the SU, it was not deemed an effective use of funds to subsidise newspapers. Mel stated they are happy to discuss the matter further with students.
